The second one quantity in a sequence devoted to fossil discoveries made within the Afar sector of Ethiopia, this paintings includes the definitive description of the geological context and paleoenvironment of the early hominid Ardipithecus kadabba. This learn via a world workforce describes center Awash overdue Miocene faunal assemblages recovered from sediments firmly dated to among 5.2 and 5.8 million years in the past. in comparison to different assemblages of comparable age, the center Awash checklist is unheard of in taxonomic range, composed of 2,760 specimens representing at the least 65 mammalian genera. This finished review of the vertebrates from the tip of the Miocene in Africa presents special morphological and taxonomic descriptions of dozens of taxa, together with species new to technology. It additionally contains effects from analyses of paleoenvironment, paleobiogeography, biochronology, and faunal turnover round the Pliocene-Miocene boundary, starting a brand new window at the evolution of mammals, African fauna, and its environments.

Example text

Although rare in the faunal collection from the late Miocene of the Middle Awash, tubulidentates are represented by at least two different species of the family Orycteropodidae (see Chapter 16). One of the two Orycteropus species is a Miocene-like, mediumsized species, whereas the other form is a large, modern-looking species. In general, the two Orycteropus species show the first evidence in favor of an African origin of modern aardvarks. The paleoenvironment of the Asa Koma and Kuseralee Members is considered in Chapter 17.

Third, biogenic samples, such as diatomites, were collected for paleoecological interpretations. Fourth, selected samples were collected for paleomagnetic analysis. More than 80 geological samples were collected from the western margin through 2005. The most critical samples that overlie and/or underlie fossiliferous horizons have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar dating method, and the results are presented in Chapter 4. 8 View to the northwest near the upper boundary of the Ananu catchments. Visible in this view are the basaltic tuffs of the Asa Koma Member, the laminated diatomite of the Adu Dora Member, and the underlying silty clays of the Saraitu Member.
