Bushes is without doubt one of the oldest of mans construction fabrics, yet as the development scene this present day is ruled by means of concrete and metal, many designers are strange with the houses of bushes and its structural vocabulary.

This new booklet starts off with a longer advent to trees as a construction fabric: its a variety of types and homes, its reaction to environmental stipulations, and the construction laws in relation to its use. It is going directly to persist with the final series of labor, beginning with the fee, after which facing the survey, the research and the appraisal

In the 1952 edition of CP 112, the UK pioneered a grading system designed speci®cally for structural work, allocating permissible stresses to a series of grades, each of which was de®ned speci®cally in terms of allowable values for the defects described above. Although CP 112 is now a superseded document, the rules have been mentioned because they can still be of use in the strength evaluation of existing timber (see appendix 3). However, they were never generally accepted by the trade for the sale of new timber because the grades related to the function of the piece within the structure.

Timber in the building environment Hazard class 2 Here the situation is as class 1, that is, under cover and protected from the direct e€ects of the weather, but where high environmental humidity could lead to occasional but not persistent wetting. This class brings the risk of fungal attack. The high humidities could stem from three sources: human occupation, faults in the fabric, or faults in the building services. This leads us to three sub-classes . Class 2A: cold areas with lack of ventilation, such as poorly ventilated roofs with insulation at ceiling level, or suspended ground ¯oor joists, where the air bricks in the external walls have either been omitted, or accidentally covered over.

The latewood cells are similar in form, but have thicker walls and correspondingly smaller cavities, and function primarily as structural support. The hardwoods, in evolutionary terms, are more developed than the softwoods, and have two distinct types of cell for water conduction and structural support. The water-conducting elements, or vessels, are a series of open-ended cells set one above the other and are generally large enough to be seen with a 10Â hand lens. Support is provided by the ®bres, thickwalled cells which are broadly similar to the latewood tracheids of the softwoods.
