They are, however, also taken by students who have ambitions to enter higher education. ‘Gendered’ patterns of subject choice and occupational preference have been well established for many years but it is less clear why these patterns resist changes to the social and economic structures. Sources of information and/or influence Although some researchers differentiate between sources of information and sources of influence relating to post-16 decisions, it is difficult in practice to separate the two.

Many researchers appear to be bound to (or by) particular theoretical approaches, and this may hinder the progress of the field. As Sjöberg (2005, p. 713) has argued, ‘if the terrain and the map do not match, the map should be questioned, not the terrain’. Unfortunately, the theories in question are not falsifiable in the conventional sense, and always appear to be able to accommodate contradictory findings. This inevitably weakens any claims to explanatory power to which they may lay claim. Recent research into educational choice has claimed to have found Bourdieu’s (1977, 1986) theoretical constructs helpful but, as the preceding discussions have demonstrated, they appear to have hindered rather than helped progress in the area.
