Events which are situationally uncertain are ones in which most if not all individuals feel unsure of how to respond. It is the subjective meaning, or verstehen, which the individual experiences in the situation that makes her receptive to social influence. When situational and subjective uncertainty do not coincide-such as when an infant can barely be restrained from eagerly approaching a toy which elicits uncertainty in all of her peers-it is the subjective feeling rather than the "objective reality" which predicts her response.

II 30 SAUL FEINMAN et al. But the accentuation of emotional referencing, especially in the earlier studies, has been much more than a matter of definitional perspective. Even those who viewed referencing as incorporating instrumental as well as emotional counsel hypothesized that emotional referencing was of prior interest and was, perhaps, the more elemental of the two forms, mainly because it was assumed that learning how to feel about an environmental event possessed temporal precedence over learning what to do when interacting with that event (Feinman, 1985).

There may be one other way in which infants learn about the situation through the referee's cues. ". 's (1986) name for this sequence-"postaction reference" -suggests that it, indeed, does provide the infant with the referee's interpretation of the situation. II 2 • A REVIEW OF SOCIAL REFERENCING 25 Similarly, Hornik and Gunnar (1988) have further suggested that social looks which are typically defined as affect sharing, in which the infant looks happily toward the mother (perhaps while concurrently vocalizing positively and babbling excitedly), may serve a postaction referencing function as well, especially if the infant has just made contact with the referent.
