When I was in Princeton, I went out of my way to show the boys the arts and highlights of New York.
But the idea of spin one-half particles of course was very common because the electron was known to be spin one-half. It was just that the presumption about the meson was that it was probably integral spin. My work showed that it was possible that it was spin one-half, and that was done in 1940, published in ’41. But it was not until probably 1946 or ’47 when a group with — I think it was Powell — in England, studying the mesons in cosmic rays, was able to find that the meson decayed and had a lifetime of some two microseconds actually.
Berkeley was on the semester system. It started in mid-August and the first semester was before Christmas, and the second semester was after Christmas and ended, I think, in late April. Oppenheimer would teach two semesters in Berkeley. In the meantime, Caltech was on the quarter system, and by coming down to Caltech in mid-April, approximately, he could teach the third quarter at Caltech which ended in June. So he would be teaching two semesters at Berkeley and the third quarter at Caltech. At that time essentially all of his students were in Berkeley, and so when he came down to teach at Caltech in the spring his students would make a pilgrimage down with him in order to continue their interaction and take his course there and to learn about what physics was going on at Caltech.
